  • One Yellow Balloon

    Julian Singer

    language (, July 10, 2014)
“One Yellow Balloon” is perfect short story for younger children ages 3-8. Simply and colorfully written with magical illustrations, the story tells how children when faced with a sharing problem will use their innocence and intuitive wisdom to reach a solution. The yellow balloon, a desired possession, is a limited resource with only 1 balloon for two children. Who gets the balloon? Who gets the to buy the balloon? While adults ponder, the solution is readily apparent to the children such that there is no struggle but an ability to reach a socially acceptable agreement that strengthens their feeling of friendship and community. My ten year old loved the story though she suggested the item to be shared should have been a cell phone!

If 14-year-old Kirra is having a mid-life crisis now, then it doesn't bode well for her life expectancy. Her so-called friends bully her, whatever semblance of a mother she had has been drowned at the bottom of a gin bottle ever since her dad left them for another woman, and now a teenage ghost is speaking to her through a broken phone booth. Kirra and the ghost make a pact. She'll prove who murdered him almost 20 years ago if he does three things for her. He makes her popular, he gets her parents back together, and he doesn't haunt her. Things aren't so simple however, and Kirra realises that people can be haunted in more ways than one.
